Frank

The fog grew thicker. I strained to see my hands when reaching out in front of me, but my other senses increased tenfold. Insects buzzed. A wild hog grunted. A coyote howled. Birds fluttered their wings. Animals moved through the undergrowth.

I smelled death, perhaps a body left for buzzards, but I could not be certain. To smell death but not see it unnerved me.

The coward within screamed: Turn around. Go back to camp and sleep.

The idiot within dismissed the coward, and I continued after the natives. If not for them, I might have already abandoned everybody else, but these Indians risked their lives for me and the others, and something willed me to care.

Clouds blocked the moon, and fog covered the ground, and I saw nothing a blind man could not see.

The horse whinnied and tried to turn back.

Whatever awaited, the horse was smart enough to know we were going the wrong way.

Having lost my edge, I forced the horse to continue after the natives.

After passing dozens of people walking, I saw no signs of humans other than the stench of death.

Lightning flashed.

The horse’s ears flicked back, snorted, and raised on its back legs.

“Whoa, boy, whoa!” I patted its neck.

Deafening thunder blasted.

Back on four legs, the horse squealed and again tried to turn around.

I pulled on one reign hard and forced him back around.

The horse spooked, and the coward within me said, “Told you so.”

In the Old World, and before we escaped, I would have listened to the horse.

I patted the horse and hoped to calm him. “It’s okay, boy. It’s okay.”

The coward within screamed: “You bloody liar!”

Not one hundred feet farther, lightning struck nearby, and a loud blast followed.

The horse’s ears flicked back again, its head turned, and he again fought to turn around.

I pulled one rein and jerked the horse’s head back.

The horse and the coward within me were close allies by this point and stood in unison against the noble but foreign voice guiding me.
